Gameloft Layoffs Amid Industry Challenges
What is the reason for Gameloft Layoff?
Gameloft Toronto, known for creating the popular game Disney Magic Kingdoms in 2016, has been significantly impacted by layoffs. The studio recently announced that it had to let go most of its staff due to difficult market conditions in the gaming industry.
The layoffs were first reported by GamesIndustry.biz last week. Tasha Huggins, the studio’s community manager, confirmed her own layoff in a LinkedIn post, mentioning that 49 employees were affected.
Gameloft attributed the layoffs to “ever-changing market conditions,” leading to a major reduction in production activities at the Toronto studio. While the studio retained a core team of HR, IT, and management, the development of Disney Magic Kingdoms has been moved to Gameloft’s Kharkiv studio in Ukraine.
“This decision has not been taken lightly, and we understand the impact it may have on affected employees,” a spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz. “We will be working with them individually to find the best way to handle their situation.”
The Toronto studio had been developing a new project, which was cancelled earlier this year. This layoff follows previous cuts in February and April, culminating in the recent large-scale reductions.
