Skip The Dishes Layoff Announcement: 800 Jobs Cut

What is the reason behind the Skip The Dishes Layoff?

Skip The Dishes, alongside its parent company Just Eat Takeaway.com, has disclosed a substantial workforce reduction in Canada, affecting 800 employees. CEO Paul Burns shared the news in a LinkedIn post, explaining that this decision is crucial for achieving sustainable growth and a more concentrated strategy for serving customers and stakeholders.

The layoffs will involve 100 employees from Skip The Dishes based in Canada, along with 700 operations staff working for Just Eat Takeaway.com in the country. Burns acknowledged the difficulty of making decisions that impact people’s livelihoods, emphasizing that the changes are essential to ensuring the company has the necessary resources and organizational structure for sustainable growth.

What changes has Skip The Dishes undergone recently?

These workforce cuts come after a year of leadership under Burns, who previously led Twitter Canada. During this time, Skip The Dishes has gone through notable transformations, including a merger and adjustments to navigate the challenges posed by a health crisis, as reported by CBC.

Founded in 2012 and based in Winnipeg, Skip The Dishes was acquired by Just Eat for $110 million in December 2016 and merged with Takeaway.com in 2020. Initially, the Covid-19 pandemic led to a surge in demand for food delivery services due to lockdowns and home confinement. However, as restrictions were lifted, increasing inflation and rising interest rates prompted consumers to find ways to reduce their spending.

Have there been previous layoffs?

In 2022, following a thorough review focused on sustainable growth, Skip The Dishes laid off 350 employees, mainly in remote contact center positions.

According to Statistics Canada, food services have significantly contributed to inflation in 2023/24, with prices rising by 3.8% since July 2023, while grocery store prices have increased by about 2% during the same period.
