IBM Layoffs: What You Need to Know
What is the reason for IBM layoff?
IBM recently implemented job cuts within its marketing and communications divisions, impacting some employees based in Research Triangle Park (RTP). This marks the second consecutive year that IBM has restructured its workforce, following an earlier announcement in January about a “workforce rebalancing” that would affect a small percentage of its global staff.
IBM spokesperson Michael Cable stated that despite the job cuts, the company still expects to maintain roughly the same number of employees by the end of 2024 as it had at the start of the year. The restructuring, according to Cable, is driven by increased productivity and the company’s ongoing effort to align its workforce with the skills in highest demand among clients—particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI) and hybrid cloud technology.
How Many Jobs Were Lost in Research Triangle Park?
IBM has not disclosed the exact number of job losses in Research Triangle Park, where it has been a significant presence since the 1960s. Known as “Big Blue,” IBM remains one of the top 10 employers in the Triangle area, with approximately 9,000 employees as of early last year, according to Wake County Economic Development. However, the company has not confirmed its current local employment numbers.
How Are Employees Affected by the Layoffs?
The impact of the layoffs was felt personally by workers like Phil Buckley, a search engine optimization strategist based in Apex. Buckley, who considered his position at IBM a “dream job,” was laid off during a meeting with his manager. While acknowledging that restructuring is a common business practice, Buckley noted that it feels different when it happens to you. He also observed that RTP’s relatively small marketing presence may have lessened the overall impact of the cuts in that region.
What Is IBM’s Focus Moving Forward?
IBM’s recent workforce adjustments come amid the company’s increased investment in artificial intelligence. In January, CEO Arvind Krishna emphasized to investors that IBM remains focused on improving productivity and scaling AI throughout the company as part of its broader digital transformation strategy. As the tech giant continues to evolve, its focus on emerging technologies like AI and hybrid cloud reflects the skills it seeks to prioritize in its workforce.
