SkipTheDishes Layoff: Hundreds of Canadian Jobs Cut
What is the reason for SkipTheDishes layoff?
SkipTheDishes has announced significant layoffs impacting hundreds of Canadian employees. Paul Burns, the company’s CEO, revealed that 100 workers in Canada will be leaving SkipTheDishes, while an additional 700 staff members employed by its parent company, Just Eat Takeaway.com, will also be let go. Burns shared this update via LinkedIn, stating that the layoffs are part of a broader organizational review and restructuring effort.
Sylvain Charlebois, a senior director at Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab, pointed to inflation as a contributing factor. He explained that rising food prices, especially on restaurant menus, have discouraged people from using delivery apps like SkipTheDishes and Uber Eats. “It’s unfortunate for those losing their jobs, but it was somewhat expected,” Charlebois noted.
What does Statistics Canada report about food service inflation trends?
Statistics Canada data shows that food services have been a major driver of inflation over the past year, with prices rising by 3.8 percent since July 2023. In contrast, grocery store prices have seen a more modest increase of about 2 percent during the same period.
Charlebois added that further layoffs in the sector are likely but suggested that a recovery could eventually follow. “Once the economy improves, and people start spending more on food services again, I expect Skip and similar companies to bounce back,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kelly Fournel, CEO of Tech Manitoba, where SkipTheDishes is a member, said the layoffs came as a surprise but have not affected her organization directly. She highlighted that SkipTheDishes had recently renewed its membership and continues to participate in leadership roles within Tech Manitoba, including providing mentors for a local educational program.
Burns emphasized that while the decision to cut staff was difficult, it is necessary to position the business for future growth and success.
