Amazon Layoff as AI Changes Roles

Amazon Layoff as AI Changes Roles

What is the reason for Amazon’s layoffs?

Amazon has announced another round of job cuts, this time impacting teams within its cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS). The company confirmed on Thursday that some roles are being eliminated as part of a broader internal review.

According to a company spokesperson, the decision came after closely reviewing priorities and determining where to focus moving forward. While the statement emphasized that the decision wasn’t taken lightly, Amazon has not disclosed exactly which teams or how many employees are affected.

However, it has been confirmed that AWS’s training and certification unit is among the areas impacted. A memo from Michelle Vaz, who heads the division, was shared internally and viewed by media.

Is This Related to AI?

Amazon clarified that these job cuts are not primarily due to its investments in artificial intelligence. Instead, they are part of an ongoing effort to streamline operations and sharpen focus in key areas. Interestingly, the company says it’s still actively hiring within AWS despite the layoffs.

Financially, AWS has shown slower growth. In the first quarter of the year, sales rose 17% to $29.27 billion, down from 18.9% in the previous quarter. It marked the third consecutive quarter where revenue growth didn’t meet expectations.

Is This Part of a Larger Trend at Amazon?

Yes, it is. Since 2022, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has been leading a cost-cutting strategy that has resulted in over 27,000 job losses across the company. While the pace of layoffs has slowed in 2024, they continue across various departments including retail, communications, and devices and services.

AWS had previously trimmed its workforce in 2023, with job cuts affecting areas like physical store technology and sales and marketing.

What Role Does AI Play in All This?

In a company-wide update last month, Jassy noted that as Amazon embraces generative AI, its staffing needs will shift. While some roles may be phased out, new roles in emerging areas are expected to grow.

“We’ll need fewer people for certain jobs, and more for others,” Jassy said. “It’s difficult to predict the full impact just yet, but we anticipate that our corporate headcount could decrease in the coming years.”

Were You Affected by the Amazon Layoffs?

If you’ve recently lost your job as part of Amazon’s layoffs, you may be entitled to more than what’s initially offered in your severance package.

In Ontario, non-unionized employees especially those in corporate, tech, or cloud computing roles could be owed significantly more compensation. Your severance entitlements depend on several factors, including your age, position, years of service, and level of compensation. In some cases, you could be entitled to as much as 24 months’ pay.

At Whitten & Lublin Employment Lawyers, we’ve helped many professionals in tech and corporate roles secure fair severance packages. If you’ve been impacted by Amazon’s recent job cuts, call us at (416) 640-2667 or reach out online  for a consultation.
